If you run a small business in Virginia—whether you’re a contractor, consultant, or local service provider—having the right insurance coverage is crucial. Two of the most common policies are General Liability Insurance and Professional Liability Insurance (Errors & Omissions, or E&O).

At first glance, they sound similar. But in reality, they protect your business from very different risks. Choosing the wrong coverage could leave dangerous gaps.

In this post, we’ll explain the difference between general liability and professional liability, when each applies, and how to decide which one (or both) your Virginia small business needs.

What Is General Liability Insurance?

General Liability Insurance—sometimes called contractor liability insurance—protects your business from common risks like:

  • Bodily injury – Example: A customer slips and falls in your office.

  • Property damage – Example: A painting contractor accidentally damages a client’s hardwood floors.

  • Advertising injury – Example: A competitor claims your marketing materials infringed on their trademark.

  • Medical payments – Covers small medical bills even if you weren’t legally at fault.

General Liability is often required for contractors in Virginia. Many clients, landlords, or project owners won’t work with you unless you show a Certificate of Insurance proving you carry coverage.

What Is Professional Liability Insurance?

Professional Liability Insurance—also known as Errors & Omissions (E&O)—protects businesses that provide advice, services, or expertise. It covers claims like:

  • Negligence – You missed a critical step in a project.

  • Errors or oversights – A mistake in your work caused a client financial loss.

  • Failure to deliver services – You didn’t meet contractual obligations.

  • Misrepresentation – A client claims your advice or report was misleading.

This type of policy is vital for:

  • Consultants

  • Accountants & bookkeepers

  • IT providers & web designers

  • Real estate agents

  • Marketing & creative agencies

  • Engineers & architects

In short, General Liability covers physical risks, while Professional Liability covers mistakes in your work or services.

Do Virginia Small Businesses Need Both?

Often, the answer is yes.

  • A contractor in Virginia may need general liability to cover property damage or injury, but also E&O if their work involves design or consultation.

  • A consultant or agency may need professional liability for advice-related risks, but still benefit from general liability in case of property or slip-and-fall claims.

Quick Examples

  • Painter in Richmond → Needs General Liability for jobsite risks, and possibly E&O if offering design consultations.

  • IT Consultant in Chesterfield → Needs Professional Liability for tech advice, plus General Liability for basic protection.

  • Retail Shop in Midlothian → Usually only General Liability unless also providing professional services.
When You Need One, the Other, or Both

When General Liability is enough (or foundational)

Any business should generally have a baseline of General Liability coverage. If your business has physical premises, customers walking through, or you host events or have foot traffic, GL is essential. It’s also a mandatory requirement in many lease agreements, contracts, or vendor relationships.

However, if your business doesn’t provide professional services or rely heavily on advice (for example, a local retail shop), you might not face E&O risk daily.

    When Professional Liability is essential

If your business gives advice, designs plans, signs off on reports, or provides services whose outcome matters (e.g. IT consulting, financial advising, marketing services, architecture, legal services, etc.), you’re exposed to claims that your customer lost money because of your error. In that case, having E&O coverage is highly recommended, because General Liability won’t step in for those types of claims.

    When you should carry both

Most service-based small businesses benefit from both policies. The reason:

    • GL protects you from the classic “someone got hurt, fell on your premises” or “you damaged their property” claims.

    • E&O protects you against professional mistakes, omissions, or service failures.

Together, they offer more complete protection. Many clients or contracts will require proof of both, especially if your business interacts with other professionals or larger corporate clients.
